detective Tony Gates,
the man with the “best
crime figures” in the
force and who inspires
steadfast loyalty among
his team. However,
the head of the anti-
corruption unit, Ted
Hastings (Adrian
Dunbar), worries that
“no one’s that good”
and gets his team to
uncover a miasma of
sexual secrets and top-
level organised crime.

Line of Duty
BBC One, 9pm

If you missed the first
series of Jed Mercurio’s
police corruption saga,
now’s your chance to
see where it started and
spot the seeds of later
intrigues involving
Arnott, Hastings,
Fleming and the
mysterious Caddy. Our
antagonist is Lennie
James’s charismatic

story in some kind of
confined space (key
details of which
become frighteningly
apparent at the end of
episode one), which
suggests that she will
need all the assistance
she can get. If McGee
and Beer have better
surprises up their
sleeves than Michael
simply being a wrong
’un, this could be a
corker.

Rebecca, especially
when Ophelia ends up
in Casa Callaghan
looking for answers and
finds lots of creaky
floorboards, strange
knockings and, at one
point, a ghostly vision.
Is Emily going mad,
and will the friendly-
seeming local builder
Sean (played by Paul
Mescal of Normal
People fame) help her?
Emily narrates the

of sarky Northern Irish
schoolgirls depicted in
McGee’s best-known
work, Derry Girls.
There is also something
surprisingly (although
not unpleasingly) old-
fashioned about it —
not just in Callaghan’s
antediluvian ideas
about the morality of
sleeping with his
students, but also in the
apparent echoes of
Daphne du Maurier’s

under the nose of his
novelist wife, Roisin.
When Michael
disappears, Emily
tracks him down to his
imposing rural home
in his native Ireland
where something
terrible has happened
(no further spoilers
here). This thriller from
Lisa McGee and her
husband, Tobias Beer,
is as far as you can
imagine from the world
