Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
three or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

This deal from an ARB/BBO
duplicate caught my eye. It tested
South’s character too, for as soon
as she saw dummy, she could see
3 NT would have made plus one;
even making her 5♦ was not going
to score that well. Still, better than
going down in 5 ♦, as most others
in that contract did. Plan the play
on West’s ten of hearts lead.
You read West’s heart to be sin-
gleton — why else lead a suit
shown by both North and South,
rather than a club shown by both
East and West? You win the ace
and cross to the ace of clubs to
unblock the suit. You must now
decide which top diamond to play
first, ie which opponent (if either)

yy

is more likely to be void.
Given West’s apparent singleton
heart lead, clearly We st w ill not
also have a void diamond. At trick
three, you cross to the ace of dia-
monds, and indeed watch East dis-
card. You then cash the king of
clubs, eliminating the suit and dis-
carding a heart from dummy,
keeping all dummy’s spades. You
lead a second diamond to the jack
and cash the king, felling West’s
queen. You cash the king of hearts
(in case West held a second heart).
We have reached the ending
across. It may appear you have to
lose two spades and a heart but
bear in mind you know West had
five spades headed by the ace for
his 1♠ bid. As long as East holds
one of the ten, jack or queen in his
doubleton, you are home. You lead
a low spade and, when East plays
low (the jack wouldn’t help), you

y

insert the eight (key play).
Let West win the ten and cash

the ace, for he is now endplayed. A
club gives you a ruff and discard
(ruff in one hand, discard the heart

y

loser from the other). West’s actual
choice of the queen of spades
works no better. You ruff, cross to
dummy’s nine of diamonds, and
shed your losing heart on dummy’s
nine of spades. Game made.

( 1 ) Negative, promising hearts.
(2) Judges her hand is a tad good for 3♦.
Reasonably so, although the 4♦ bid
bypassed the ubiquitous 3NT, which would
have made an overtrick in some comfort.
( 3 ) In case North held five hearts.
