Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
four or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

First postulated by Frenchman
Jean-René Vernes in the 1950s, the
Law of Total Tricks states that the
total number of trumps held by both
sides in their longest combined fit is
(surprisingly often) equal to the
total number of tricks they can
make with that suit as trumps.
Total trumps = total tricks
Look at this deal.
There are 18 total trumps — N-S
have nine spades and E-W have
nine hearts. You’d expect there to
be 18 total tricks. Let’s see.
N-S can make nine tricks in
spades — running ♦Q to avoid a
loser with♦K onside. E-W make
nine tricks in hearts, losing two
spades and (because♦A is offside)
two diamonds. 18 total tricks.
Now swap ♦K from East to
West (♦4 in return). This affects
how many tricks can be made by
both N-S (who can now make only
yy
eight with the diamond finesse los-
ing) and E-W (who can make ten,
with♦A onside). However, cru-
cially, the total tricks remains at 18.
Assuming neither side is vulner-
able, the bidding will soon reach
the three-level, N-S bidding 3♠
over E-W’s 3 ♥. Should E-W now
bid 4 ♥? Yes — because if there are
1 8 total tricks, either 3 ♠ by N-S or
4 ♥ by E-W must make. Should N-S
now bid 4 ♠ over 4 ♥? No —
because both 4 ♠ and 4 ♥ could fail
(each side making nine tricks, as in
the diagram). The contract accord-
ing to the Law is 4♥ by E-W.
East opens a Weak 2 ♥, South
overcalls 2♠ and We st bids 4 ♥,
raising to the (ten-card) level of
the fit (a corollary of the Law).
Should North bid 4 ♠?
North expects E-W to have ten
hearts and his side to have nine
spades: 19 trumps, ergo 19 tricks.
Either 4 ♥ or 4 ♠ must make. He
bids 4 ♠.
West leads ♥KQ. Declarer
ruffs, draws trumps and leads
towards ♦K. With♦A onside, he
makes ten tricks for the loss of two
diamonds and one heart.
As the Law implies, 4♥ would
make nine tricks. Swap♦K and
♣K and 4 ♠ would not make.
However, North would still be cor-
rect to bid it, for now 4 ♥ would
make. [email protected]
