I
t was fascinating to watch the
clouds roll by over the weekend
in the shapes of weird and
wonderful creatures, an
impressive pageant that
included whales, dragons, rabbits
and a goblin with a tall pointy hat,
all shining bright against a blue sky.
Picking out characters in clouds is
irresistible because our brains are
wired to recognise faces and other
familiar shapes and patterns. This is
a phenomenon called pareidolia and
was touched on by Shakespeare in
Hamlet. “Do you see yonder cloud
that’s almost in shape of a camel?”
asks Hamlet. Polonius agrees: “’tis
like a camel indeed”, after which
Hamlet wonders whether the cloud
is actually like a weasel or a whale.
Leonardo da Vinci was familiar
with pareidolia and in A Treatise on
Painting he urged artists to take
inspiration from stains, rocks, mud
and other unlikely sources.
“If you have to invent some
scene, you can see there
resemblances to a number of
landscapes, adorned in various ways
with mountains, rivers, rocks, trees,
great plains, valleys and hills,” he
wrote. “Moreover, you can see
various battles and rapid actions of
figures, strange expressions on
faces, costumes and an infinite
number of things, which you can
reduce to good, integrated form.”
An episode of The Simpsons used
patterns in clouds in its storyline. In
The Telltale Head (1990) Bart
Simpson notices a cloud that looks
like Jebediah Springfield, the
founder of the town of Springfield,
but without his head. Bart is so
inspired by this sight that he
decapitates the statue of Jebediah
Springfield in the town square,
much to the horror of the residents
when they discover the vandalism.
Bart is so filled with remorse that he
confesses to his crime and is
forgiven.
Patterns in clouds have also
provided divine inspiration. In
March 2013 a cloud was seen over
Florida in the shape of a fiery red
angel with wings stretched upwards.
It appeared on the day that the
election of Pope Francis was
announced in the Vatican.
