Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
four or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.
How you rate 12 words, average;
16, good; 22, very good; 29, excellent

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

    enter an opposing auction, partly
    to disrupt their conversation, and
partly to indicate a lead to partner.
    However, unlike almost all the
East players in the Major Alt
    Invitational, I really don’t think I
    would have bid 3 ♠ over North’s
    2NT. You’re vulnerable against
not, so could go for a huge penalty
    (no North-South stopped off to
    y
defend 3♠ doubled but to do so
would have reaped a 1,400 penalty
    — declarer wins only four spade
tricks after a forcing defence). And
    y
    when, inevitably, the opponents
outbid you, you have given away a
    lot of information.
    Plan the play in 6 ♥ on♠ 2 lead
    — a clear singleton (because of
    y
    East’s bid).
    One successful declarer rose
with the king of spades then
crossed to the (queen and) ace of
hearts. He led a heart back to the
    nine, East discarding. Placing East
with a 6-5 shape (how else could
he justify that 3♠ bid?), presum-
    ably 6 ♠- 5 ♦, declarer cashed the
king of hearts, ruffed a diamond
    and exited with a heart.
West won the jack and switched
to the ten of clubs but declarer won
    dummy’s queen (noting East’s jack)
then crossed to the king of clubs and
back to dummy’s ace. On that third
round of clubs, East was squeezed in
    spades and diamonds, whichever
suit he discarded giving declarer a
long card in that suit. Slam made.
    However, my favourite success-
ful line on grounds of simplicity
was that of Polish American Josef
Blass. After a similar auction to the
one above, he won the spade lead
(with the king) and played a heart
to the (queen and) ace. Reading
    g y
East for the 6♠- 5 ♦ shape, he then
    banged down the ace-queen of
    clubs (East discarding), crossed to
the king and (crucial extra trick)
ruffed his fourth club with the king.
He cashed the ace-king of dia-
    monds, shedding two spades, then
led dummy’s nine of hearts (over-
    taking with the ten).
    y
Let West win the jack and lead a
minor, for declarer could ruff, draw
West’s last trump, and win the final
trick with the ace of spades. No
    fancy footwork required, only a
ruff in the short trump hand.

    (1) Really? Vulnerable against not after
    North has shown 2 0 -22 balanced.
    (2) Wants double to be for penalty but most
(like this North-South pair) would play it as
    negative (ie take-out).
    (3) Practical leap. An alternative would be
5NT, showing two places to play, which would
work out better than 6 ♥ if partner is eg
    3 ♠ 2 ♥ 4 ♦ 4 ♣ (leading to the 4-4 fit 6♣).
