A
fter a rather cool
summer, temperatures
are rocketing today, at
least in the southeast.
This turn of events is
partly thanks to a hurricane. After
hitting parts of the Caribbean,
Hurricane Isaias tore along the
Atlantic coast of the US before
sweeping through eastern Canada as
what is known as an ex-hurricane.
The storm also barged into the jet
stream, sending a ripple in its track
across the Atlantic, rather like a
sending a wave along a skipping
rope. That pushed the jet stream
north of Britain and allowed high
pressure to build, leaving drier
conditions. That high pressure is
also drawing in hot air from Europe
and today exceptional heat is
forecast across central, eastern
and southern parts of England,
where temperatures could reach
36C or higher.
It’s easy to be blasé about
temperatures as high as this — after
all, it was only a week ago, on July
31, that 37.8C was recorded at
Heathrow — but these are truly
unusual temperatures in the
weather records of Britain. Saturday
is also forecast to be another
extremely hot day in the southeast,
and the heat is expected to hang
on into Sunday and the start of
next week.
The heatwave could also bring
“tropical nights”. The World
Meteorological Organisation
conjured up this vivid phrase for
24-hour periods when temperatures
do not drop below 20C. This
happens rarely in Britain, but it
could be the face of things to come
as the climate warms up and
heatwaves become more intense.
There is uncertainty in next
week’s forecast, though, because low
pressure may encroach from France
and bring thunderstorms from
Tuesday to Thursday, moving
northwards in England. Those
thunderstorms are likely to be hit
and miss, however, and places that
avoid them will remain warm. After
the drama normal service for
summer may resume once again,
with a cooler, wetter feed of Atlantic
weather lasting further into August.
