t hadn’t been a bad season for
Bath but it hadn’t been a good
one. In Stuart Hooper’s first
campaign at the helm, Bath won
seven Premiership games and
lost six before coronavirus struck.
One week they were promising, the
next disappointing. They return to
action next week, in sixth place in a
12-team league.
Not bad is... not bad — but it
certainly isn’t good enough for a club
that has aspirations. Bruce Craig
didn’t buy Bath in 2010 to spend an
eternity muddling around in the
middle. That is why the three-year
contract offered to Ben Spencer, the
Saracens scrum half, rates as one of
the best signings the club has made in
the professional era.
Spencer comes loaded with
positives. From Hooper’s point of
view, the 28-year-old brings the
Saracens manual to Bath. It is a long
time since the West Country club

England’s gain as Spencer finally gets top billing

understood the imperative of
long-term planning, something
Saracens have mastered. It has been a
while since they had a recognisable
game plan based around much more
than “don’t get caught in your own
half”. Not that there is anything
wrong with simplicity. That most
basic of game plans was very much
the Saracens way in the first decade of
this century. God, they were boring.
But they were building incrementally.
Mark McCall, the club’s director of
rugby, has never deserted the
imperative of the territorial game yet
he has added beautiful layers of lovely
running rugby, either structured or on
the counterattack.
Spencer can spill the Saracens
beans. If they had signed 37-year-old
Richard Wigglesworth, first-choice
scrum half for the majority of the
Saracens era, it would have been
excellent, too, despite his age. The
Saracens scrum halves have been at
the epicentre of their success.
Spencer, who has won four England
caps and flew out as a World Cup
final replacement for the injured Willi
Heinz, lacks Wigglesworth’s back
catalogue of match management over
the years, but he is a decade younger.
He may have played more than 150
games for Saracens but a vast number

have been off the bench. He is a
young 28-year-old, with the talent
and determination to yet make the
England No 9 shirt his — if he can
transform Bath.
It is smart of an inexperienced
director of rugby like Hooper to
utilise the knowledge of the Saracen.
However, there is much more to the
man than merely being the spy come
in from north London. His is a
potential rarely tapped. When
given the chance to flourish,
he has provided sparkling
performances. Last season,
when Saracens squeezed
the life out of Munster
in the Heineken Cup
semi-final, he delivered
as accurate a display
of tactical kicking as
I have ever seen. Owen Farrell
may have been on the field
but Spencer pulled all the
strings masterfully.
In the final against
Leinster he didn’t quite
hit those heights and,
sure enough, with
55 minutes gone,
McCall introduced the
ageless Wigglesworth.
One thing Saracens
did not do was allow

Spencer to relax into the role of
first-choice No 9.
Bath have some talented youngsters
and, in Will Chudley, a scrum half
who brought the ways of the decade’s
“second” team, Exeter Chiefs, to the
party. Clever darter that he is, the
Chief is not in Spencer’s class. Bath
will relish his box-kicking (and the
sheer length of his clearance kicks).
That is what they do so often but
not always so well.
In the 2017-18 season,
Spencer was Saracens’
top tryscorer. Bath
have not threatened
sufficiently around
the fringes for some
time. It has enabled
opposing defences
to pressurise Rhys
Priestland, their fly
half. Many notice
how deep he has
been playing of late,
fewer the lack of menace
inside him. With Spencer
surging around the fringes,
there will be space for the
Welshman to tip-toe into flatter
parts of the park and bring the likes

of Jonathan Joseph and Anthony
Watson into the game nearer the
gainline.
Spencer’s pass is quick and
accurate, although he may have to
accelerate his game if referees
emulate the manner in which their
New Zealand counterparts have been
calling games in Super Rugby
Aotearoa. Breakdowns have been
spitting out rapid ball. The need to be
there, waiting for the ball to pop out,
à la Aaron Smith, will hopefully grow.
A speedier game requires a scrum
half yapping at the heels of his
forwards, maintaining a slick service
for his attackers.
Saracens have been one of the most
adept sides of all at slowing down
breakdowns, resetting their chase
game before the scrum half sends
possession soaring into orbit. The
long-striding Spencer could do with a
little more scurry around the fringes.
If he can find a balance for Bath
between this quicker tempo and the
static solidarity he brings with his
boot, Bath could come out of their
becalmed state with the wind in their
sails. Spencer, at last an unchallenged
club No 1, has it in him to change
Eddie Jones’s way of thinking, making
Bath a force and securing himself the
England No 9 shirt in the process.
