Deal close for

Aubameyang

Zinédine Zidane has claimed that
Gareth Bale asked to be left out of the
Real Madrid squad to face Manchester
City in the Champions League tonight.
The club announced on Wednesday
that the out-of-favour Wales forward
would not be among the 24-man party
for the round-of-16 tie and Zidane, the
Real head coach, said after landing in
Manchester yesterday that Bale had
asked not to travel because of a
“personal reason”.
“The only thing to say — and this was
in a personal conversation between us
— is that he preferred not to play,”
Zidane said. “The rest remains between
me and him. I don’t want to add
anything else. He’s not injured.”
Bale, 31, who joined Real in 2013 from
Tottenham Hotspur, has two years left
on his £650,000-a-week contract but

Arsenal are hopeful that Pierre-
Emerick Aubameyang is on the brink of
signing a contract extension in what
would be a huge boost to Mikel Arteta’s
plans for next season.
Aubameyang, 31, who joined Arsenal
from Borussia Dortmund in 2018, has
one year left on his present deal and his
representatives have been in talks with
Arsenal over an extension, which
would include an additional two years.
It is understood that Arsenal are
optimistic that an agreement will be
reached after positive talks with their
captain, who finished second top-scor-
er in the Premier League with 22 goals
and scored twice in the 2-1 FA Cup final
victory against Chelsea last Saturday.
The new deal would likely mean he
earns more than £250,000 a week until

Pakistan on the charge

Elizabeth Ammon

England were put to the sword by
Pakistan’s bowlers on a bad day for
the home team that left them
teetering at 12 for three, and then
92 for four at stumps, trailing by
234 runs.
A poor display with the ball in
the 20 overs after lunch meant
that Pakistan made a healthy total
of 326, led by a sublime 156 from
the opener, Shan Masood.
Having bowled well in the
morning session, in which they
took three wickets for the loss
of only 48 runs, England were
listless, with Joe Root, the captain,
seemingly out of ideas about how
to make a breakthrough. Pakistan
grabbed the initiative to leave
England in danger of another
defeat in the first Test of a series
— as happened last month against
West Indies in Southampton.
Shan, 30, batted for nearly eight
hours to achieve his career-best
score in an innings that combined
defiance and flair and put England
firmly on the back foot.
The day went from bad to worse
when Rory Burns was trapped leg-
before in the first over of England’s
reply before Mohammad Abbas
wreaked havoc with a devastating
display of fast bowling to remove
Dom Sibley for eight and the prize
wicket of Ben Stokes without
scoring, leaving England reeling
on 12 for three.
Root was dismissed for 14, edging
