Film A Room

with a View
Film4, 6.45pm

Helena Bonham Carter
combines a dewy
beauty with the gauche
propriety with which
Edwardian ladies were
expected to corset
themselves. Adapted
from EM Forster’s
novel, this is a lush
wallow in nostalgic
romanticism. (PG, 1985)

funnelled hundreds
of thousands of dollars
to steer recruits to
prominent athletic
programmes. Here
Dawkins explains how
a kid from small-town
Michigan wound up in
a hotel surrounded
by FBI agents with
a warrant for his arrest.
He wasn’t the only
one — soon Adidas
executives were in
handcuffs too.

The Scheme
Sky Documentaries/
Now TV, 9pm

Sky Documentaries is
fast amassing a wealth
of top US documentary
films, and this one is no
exception. It concerns
a 25-year-old, Christian
Dawkins, who was
allegedly part of a
criminal enterprise
that infiltrated college
basketball teams and

Margolyes’s tour of
“what it means to be
Australian today” the
doughty wanderer uses
the book as her guide
while at the top end
of the country. Again
she has mixed feelings
about what she finds
— at the McArthur
River Mine, at a remote
cyclone-flattened cattle
station and at a koala
centre. It’s an unusually
thoughtful travelogue.

Miriam Margolyes:

Almost Australian
BBC Two, 9pm

The Lucky Country was
an ironically titled 1954
novel by Donald Horne
about Australia. Ironic
because Horne thought
Australia owed any
prosperity to the luck
of natural resources
rather than anything
its people did. In the
final part of Miriam

Travel Man’s

Greatest Trips:

Food and Drink
Channel 4, 8pm

“What does TV do
better but repeat
itself?” Richard Ayoade
asks at the start of
his travel show
compendium. Lately,
viewers are hardly
going to disagree with
that, but this is breezy
zone-out fun as Ayoade,

a master of droll
epithets, looks back at
his “phalanx of packed
peregrinations”. This
week the theme is food
and drink, so we’re
back in Zurich as he
eats muesli with Frank
Skinner, who recalls
the first teabags in the
UK (that was in 1961),
and in Athens where he
shares a taster menu
with Dawn French, a
fan of lamb’s brain.
