Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.
Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.
From these letters, make words of
four or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

When your longest suit has no
card jack or above, it is better to
lead high for hate: “Partner, I have
length but no strength.” This will
better enable partner to switch
suits when necessary. When you
lead the fourth highest card, you
promise a picture (or the ace).
Exerciseee: The bidding proceeds
1NT-3NT. What would you lead
from these hands?
From the first, lead ♥8 — lead-
ing high for hate. You hope when
dummy is tabled, partner will be
able to work out you’re leading
high for hate rather than fourth
from the top.
From the second, lead♠ 10 , a
standard top of a sequence lead
(here, an internal sequence), show-
ing♠ 9 and denying ♠J. This is not
high for hate, which means the
nine or below (a high non-honour).
From the third, it’s something of
a toss-up between ♥ 7 and ♦7.
However, the opponents have not
investigated for a major-suit fit, so
rate to be weaker in majors than
minors. Prefer♥7.

West looked no further than his
fourth from the top heart, leading
♥ 4 v 3NT. East won ♥A and, hop-
ing West’s hearts were, for example,
♥KQ642, naturally returned♥ 9. A
grateful declarer won♥Q and
cashed five rounds of diamonds.
She followed by cashing♣A and
leading to her ♣KQ. With♣J falling,
she could enjoy ♣108. With ♥K to
come, that was 12 tricks made.

West leads a heart because of
length but carefully chooses♥8,
leading high for hate. East wins♥A
and knows her partner’s ♥ 8 is not
fourth highest (she holds ♥9,
dummy the♥J 10 ). A switch is indi-
cated and, looking at dummy, it has
to be spades.
To cater to declarer holding
♠Qxx and We st ♠Kxx, East
switches carefully to♠J (key play),
just beating dummy’s highest card.
(Switch to♠4 and declarer plays
♠7; West has to win♠K to beat
dummy’s ♠ 1 0 and now declarer’s
♠Q is a stopper.) Declarer covers
y
♠J with ♠Q (else ♠J wins) but
West wins ♠K and returns♠6. East
wins cheaply with♠ 9 , cashes ♠A
and follows with ♠4. One down.
