Welovecolour– notbrightprimary
coloursbutmoremutedtones.We
liketousepaintsbyZoffanyand
PapersandPaintsasthecolourslook
differentasthelightchanges.’
Theformalsittingroomwasvery
challenging.‘Werestoredtheoriginal
proportions and cornicing. It’s a
north-facingroomandweopened
it uptothesouthwithtwodouble
doorsleadingintothediningroom.
Thetworoomsaremeanttoberead
togethersothatthere’sa senseof
livinginbothspaces,’saysMike
Silkwallpaperonthesittingroom
wallsintroducesreflectivitytomake
theroomappearlighter.Fora large
family,ensuringtherewasenough
seatingwasimportant,soaswellas
a sofa,therearefabulouslytactile
sheepskinchairsanda chaiselongue
inthebaywindow.A rockcrystal
chandelierandfascinatingpiecesof
artaddtothesenseofdrama.
Nextdoor,thespectaculardining
roomwithitsSirJohnSoanearches
has bespoke de Gournay wallpaper
withscenesofIndia.Thelargely
monochromaticdesigncomestolife
withunexpectedburstsofcolour.
‘Wechosetheglass-toppedtableto
reflectlight,’saysMike.‘It’sabout
makinga spacefeelbiggerand
creatingillusions– is whatyou are
seeingrealora reflection?
‘Youcan’tbeineveryroomatthe
sametimebutyoushouldenjoythe
entirehousevisually– thingsshould
drawyoureyefromoneroomtothe
next.Wewantedtocreateanopen
feelbutwiththeabilitytoclose
eachroomoff.Thereis theatricality
in it and practicality, too.’&
