Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
three or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

Although you normally lead top of
two cards as a defender, you should
lead low from a doubleton trump
(indeed almost any trump holding).
You play high-low from a double-
ton when leading a side suit to flag
your ability to ruff — clearly this
does not apply to trumps.
Seldom does a deal crop up bet-
ter to illustrate the folly of leading
top of a doubleton trump than
today’s — from an Andrew Robson
Bridge Online duplicate on Bridge
Base Online (do come and play —
see andrewrobson.co.uk).
With a blind lead v 6♠, West at
both tables opted for a trump lead.
At Table One, West led the nine of
spades. Declarer correctly won
dummy’s ace — play low, and East
wins the king and returns a second
spade: no longer can declarer ruff
two diamonds in dummy.
Declarer crossed to the ace of dia-
monds and ruffed a diamond (cor-
rectly refraining from playing the
king before a ruff — which would
make an overruff more likely). She
ruffed a heart back to hand and
ruffed a third diamond with the
eight (West could only discard).
She ruffed a heart back to hand
(East’s ace appearing was not rele-
vant), and led the queen of spades.
East won the king but it was all
over — declarer’s diamonds were
established and that was 12 tricks
and slam made.
At Table Two, West led the four
of spades (key play). Declarer rose
with the ace (as he had to), and
yyy
played identically, crossing to the
ace of diamonds and ruffing a dia-
mond. He ruffed a heart back to
hand and led a third diamond.
However, on this trick West could
ruff in with the nine of spades,
higher than dummy’s eight. With
East still holding the king of
spades, that was one down. West
had found the one card in his hand
to beat 6♠ — the four of spades.

(1) “High sixes” (the “high fives” principle
— start high, finish low).
(2) Vulnerable, a heart bid would be far too
cheeky with such a broken suit.
(3) The key bid. It is wiser to raise 1♠ to 2 ♠
(despite the lack of a fourth card) than rebid-
ding 2 ♣ (ugh) or 2 ♥ (overstating the val-
ues). Lest you are concerned that raising to
2 ♠ may result in missing an eight-card
heart fit, reflect that if South has four
hearts, she’ll have five spades (she’d respond
the cheaper 1 ♥ with 4 ♥- 4 ♠). If you have
a heart fit, you also have a spade fit.
(4) Practical leap. Absent such highfalutin
treatments as 5 ♥ exclusion keycard (ask-
ing for keycards outside hearts), it will be
very hard to find out whether 7 ♠ is on. The
advantage of the leap to 6 ♠ is South hides
her hand.
