subsequent handling of additional
content for Destiny, pretty much
throughout the whole of the series’
life. For the first game, most of the
grievances centred around the
story, as fans were critical of what
they considered a lack of substance
or coherence – something which
goes directly against what Bungie
is known for. An early trailer even
showed content that didn’t appear
in the game once it shipped, which
prompted many to question whether
much of the story originally planned
for the game was cut and the game
rushed out by Activision in order to hit
a publishing deadline.
Destiny 2, which was much better
received with regards to its story,
was nonetheless subject to a huge
backlash from its community for its
inclusion of microtransactions, and
having some content locked behind a
paywall. While some of these elements
have been adjusted or removed, those
criticisms of Activision’s handling of
the Destiny franchise have stuck in
people’s minds.

WHAT’S THE MATTER?

As Bungie sets off on its own, where will it go?

Thanks to the announcement of Bungie and Activision’s
separation, talk is now swirling around what’s in store
for the studio in the future. Last year Bungie saw a
huge investment of $100 million from Chinese tech and
gaming company NetEase, a company that specialises
in online games. At the same time this investment gave
NetEase a minority stake in the Bungie studio and a
seat on its board of directors. It’s no secret that Bungie
wants to create new games outside of Destiny, as part
of the announcement from Bungie at the time stated
that its goal was “to become an entertainment
company that sustains many worlds simultaneously –
Destiny and new worlds to come”. This investment will
go towards helping it build these worlds. There was
also the leaked information from the European
Intellectual Property office database, that Bungie filed
for a trademark for something called ‘Matter’, along
with an image of the logo. Could this be its next game?

franchise going forward, but questions
remain over the future of the series.
Although Bungie has stated it
will continue developing Destiny
going forward, a lot of questions
are floating around, such as are we
going to see a Destiny 3? Will we see
less frequent content updates? Will
microtransations remain? What is
certain is that it’s inevitable that this
split will result in some big changes
for the space-faring franchise,
although hopefully for the better.
Regardless of the reasons behind

the companies’ separation, it can
only be a positive thing for Bungie,
Destiny and any other future games
the studio make. This is a wonderful
opportunity for Bungie to capitalise
on having complete creative control
over their IPs, and certainly means
the studio will be able to do what’s

without having to worry about meeting
obligations to third parties.
