I
t’s testament to the endless creativity and diversity of
tabletop gaming that this month’s issue features a card
game about medieval magic and alchemy (Res Arcana,
p18) next to a board game about birds (Wingspan, p24),
while our packed Played section runs the thematic gamut from
17th-century scientists travelling around Europe (Newton)
to political corruption in Ming-dynasty China (Gùgōng).
As always, we’ve gone behind the cardboard to
delve into the minds of those who come up with those
experiences that keep us pinned to the table for hours
on end. Whether it’s the influence of classic music on the
creator of Anomaly (p32), the unlikely success of Hive
(p42), the teenager who turned her school homework
into a game (p48), the indie visionary who realises his
ideas in wood (p62) or our chats with designers who work
best in a pair (p38), you’ll find no better exploration of
the who, what and why of the games you’re playing – and
should be playing.
Once you’ve heard about how the games were made, you
can make sure you’re enjoying them to the full; this month’s
mag includes tips on painting miniatures (p85), roleplaying
(p90), saving money on wargaming (p58) and even being
a spoilsport (p51). Just don’t blame us if that last one
means you end up looking for single-player games.
