Has to be Mansions of Madness. My
partner fell in love with this game
and knowing she enjoys playing it as
much I do makes it a must on our
board game date nights!

school’, Stratego.

Anything! Getting her to play a game
is a challenge, but she’s quite fond of
Azul. I’ve ordered Cat Lady and she’s
keen to give it a go!

Arhkam Horror: The Card Game
two-player is perfect. Light a few
candles and get on some thematic
music for atmosphere. Defeat
some cultists and kiss your partner.
Works a charm.

Wolfgang Warsch had a busy 2018.
The designer was nominated three
times across the prestigious Spiel des
Jahres and Kennerspiel des Jahres
awards, winning the Expert Game of
the Year prize for his bag-builder The
Quacks of Quedlinburg. Meanwhile, he
left players in a tizzy with his divisive
Spiel des Jahres-nominated social
card game The Mind and counting
dice in Kennerspiel-nominated roll-
and-write hit Ganz Schön Clever.
2019 looks to be just as crammed
for Warsch, with the reveal of a follow-
up to Ganz Schön Clever, Doppelt so
Clever (‘Double so clever’), the first
expansion for Quacks and a new game
called Die Tavernen im Tiefen Thal
(‘The Tavern of the Deep Valley’).
Doppelt so Clever adds a new
action to the options of Ganz Schön
Clever, while Quacks of Quedlinburg:
Die Kräuterhexen adds bits for a
fifth player plus ingredients and
books inspired by its ‘herbal witches’.
Die Tavernen im Tiefen Thal,
meanwhile, sees players attracting
visitors to their drinking hole by
carefully
picking dice
and crafting
their individual
decks of
cards.
The game
includes five
modules to customise the
level of difficulty.
With the promise of more games
from one of last year’s hottest
designers, Warsch already looks set
to be one of 2019’s talking points too.
The studio behind Clank! has
announced a new series of games
designed for just one player.
The first instalment in
Renegade’s Solo Hero series
is Proving Grounds, a real-time
solitaire dice game designed
by FUSE and Flatline creator
Kane Klenko.
As well as including six
different modules that can
be combined together for
unique challenges, the game
comes with a novella written
by RPG designer and author
Monica Valentinelli that lays
out the fantasy world and
its characters, serving as a
prologue to the gladiatorial
arena combat of the gameplay.
Only the Strongest Has the
Heart of a Wizened Queen
follows Maia Strongheart,
a fighter framed for the
death of her mother, the Sun
Queen. Players take control of
Stongheart in the arena during
each half-hour play session,
battling to prove her innocence.
Proving Grounds is due
for release this April, and
will cost $35 (£27) in the
US – that’ll get you some
cards, dice, tokens and
the game’s storybook.
The next entry in the
Solo Hero series is yet to
be announced.
