Taking a Tumble
The Apple Watch Series 5 also boasts a
brand new accelerometer and gyroscope.
The accelerometer measures speed of
movement of the watch and the gyroscope
can track its rotation and twist. By using
them in combination, the watch can tell if
you’ve taken a tumble, if a hard fall has been
detected, your watch gives you an alert asking
if you’ve fallen and presenting you with a
simple way of contacting the emergency
services. This Emergency SOS feature also
displays your Medical ID badge on the screen
for when help arrives and if you have an Apple
Watch Series 5 with cellular connectivity, it
works when your iPhone isn’t nearby. If you
haven’t fallen, or you’re OK and need no
assistance the alert can be dismissed, but
if you’re unresponsive after 60 seconds, an
emergency call is made automatically and
your emergency contacts notified.
Obviously, fall detection is of great
benefit to older people living on their own,
but it’s also a real boon to hikers and rock
climbers. You could be knocked out cold
due to a climbing accident and help could
be brought to you without any intervention
from yourself at all.
Take a nasty tumble and your
watch can summon help.
Emergency SOS makes it easy
to sound the alarm.
Attain Your Goals
Health insurance providers have a vested interest in
keeping their subscribers fit and healthy. That’s why
America’s third largest, Aetna, is launching its own
fitness app.
The Attain app combines your health history with
your Apple Watch activity to offer personalised goals.
You attain points for your fitness activity, which can
then be spent on a new Apple Watch or gift cards
from leading retailers.
Currently, it’s only available to Aetna customers,
but if it catches on, maybe more healthcare providers
and insurance institutions will do something similar.
