The Secret Garden
In the England of 1947, an orphaned 10-year-
old girl, Mary Lennox (Dixie Egerickx), is sent
to the estate of her haunted uncle, Archibald
Craven (Colin Firth), in the English area of
Yorkshire. At the estate, she soon discovers a
secret – and, as it turns out, magical – garden.
FIVE FACTS:
- This is one of many screen adaptations of
Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 novel of the
same name. - However, while that novel was set in the
Edwardian era in which it was written, the
new film adaptation shifts the events to
1947 , shortly after the Second World War. - Firth previously appeared in Alan Grint’s
1987 film version of The Secret Garden. - Shooting of the new film took place across
various locations in Yorkshire. - One of those locations was Helmsley
Walled Garden – a five-acre garden that here
serves as the secret garden of the film’s title.
