The unsung heroes of the web
are typographers. I think
typography is bringing a new level
of beauty to the web and there are
so many innovative uses of type as
web technology gets better. I could
take this in two possible directions:
- A typeface I think is having
a positive impact by bringing
experimental type to a mainstream
environment is Digestive. Designed
by Jérémy Landes (Studio Triple), it’s
available from futurefonts.xyz.
- Grilli Type is making awesome
fonts, then going a step further
and making fantastic microsites for
each typeface (such as http://www.
gt-zirkon.com/). These sites often
showcase how type can be used
beyond the expected.

Designer, 50,000feet

Any and every web designer from 1990–2001.
They used a new toolset to craft websites with
no idea of what the medium could be, just asking the
question: “What else can I make?” The answer back
then was forever-looping background animations,
view counters, animating cursors and walls of text. So
let’s raise a glass to the ones who emerged from the
pre-world-wide-web darkness without Google or
anyone else to light the way – just the hunger to
make things that had never been made before.

It is easier than ever to stay
abreast of new technology – and
to see the flag bearers of our industry
setting the standards leaves a
designer/developer with a quandary.
They must spend their time trying to
keep up to speed, on top of convincing
colleagues or clients there are better
ways to work. All while still working
within the confines of their job. It is
these people who are the feet on the
ground I feel are creating the change
and are therefore heroes.
