ON THE COVER

The real story behind the Parkes Radio
Telescope’s role in the Apollo mission.
Turn to page 28.

FOR THOSE OF US of a certain age, it’s sortofhardtobelievethat 50
years have passed since Neil Armstrong utteredthosefamouswords:
“That’s one small step for [a] man... one giantleapformankind”.Yethalf
a century has indeed come and gone. And crewedspaceflightbeyondEarth
orbit seems to have come and gone too. No-onehastravelledfurtherthan
620 kilometres from Earth’s surface since 1997,whenthespaceshuttle
Discovery boosted the Hubble Space Telescopetoa higherorbit.
Why haven’t we been back to the Moon? Politicsandmoney, essentially.
The ‘space race’ is long gone, and there is littlepoliticalwillforexpensive
Moon ventures. That said, there has been somethingofa resurgencein
lunar exploration in recent years, with US, ChineseandIndianrobotic
missions sent to our nearest neighbour. (AnIsraelimissionalmostmadeit,
crashing onto the lunar surface in April.) TheUShasa newplan(another
one!) to return to the Moon soon, with NASAdirectedtouseprivately
developed rockets if it can’t produce its ownnewlaunchvehiclesintime.
Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin companyunveileditsBlueMoon
lunar landing vehicle in early May, with a proposedfirstlaunchdateof
2024 (target: the lunar south pole). Will it actuallyhappen?Onlytimewill
tell. All I can say is, I just hope it’s not another 50 yearsuntilhumansonce
again plant their boots on the dusty desolationoftheMoon.
