Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
four or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

    Just occasionally, a bid comes
along that you’ve never met. Take
    today’s deal from an Andrew

    The wonderful thing was partner
    read it perfectly.
With a tricky opening lead, West
    chose a low diamond. Declarer
beat East’s queen with the king and
ruffed a spade. He then cashed the
ace of hearts, West discarding a
spade to expose the 4-0 split. The
uneven heart split was quite good
news in a subtle way — it
enhanced the chances of West hav-
    ing length in both minors.
Declarer crossed to the ace of
    diamonds (East could hardly be
void for that would have mean
We st wo uld have led low, not the
jack, from ♦J109xxx). He ruffed a
    second spade and, crucially, ruffed
    a third diamond. This removed
East’s last diamond, so now only
    West could guard diamonds.
Declarer now led out the king-
    queen-jack of hearts, drawing
    East’s trumps as West discarded
spades. However, what could We st
discard when, at trick ten, declarer
cashed the ace of spades (see end-
    ing across)?
If West discarded the jack of
    diamonds, dummy’s eight of dia-
    monds would be promoted. When
West chose to discard a club,
declarer could win the last three
tricks in clubs with the king, ace,
and long club. Thirteen tricks and
grand slam made — there had
    been no defence. North-South
    +2,2 1 0.
Have you spotted the par result?
    It’s 7 ♠ doubled minus six by
    East-West — “only” -1,400. Given
    that’s cheaper than defending 6♥
    (-1,430), it’s a worthwhile sacri-
fice. One table found it. The auc-
tion round the table was 2NT-
    3 ♠- 4 ♠- 5 ♠- 7 ♥-7♠-Dbl-end.

    (2) Have you met this bid? North meant it
as, “I have a 6♥ bid with a void spade. Bid
7 ♥ if you have a suitable hand.”
    (3) Highly suitable — holding the fifth heart
including all the pictures, and three top
