Contributors

William Brennan is a freelance journalist and the

winner of a 2020 National City and Regional

Magazine Award for feature writing. This is his

first article for the magazine.

Kevin Cooley is an artist who works in

photography, video and installation, with a focus

on our relationship to nature and technology.

Mattathias Schwartz is a contributing writer for

the magazine who lives in Washington. He last

wrote a profile of Attorney General William Barr.

James Verini is a contributing writer for the

magazine and the author of ‘‘They Will Have to

Die Now,’’ which was adapted from a series

for the magazine about the battle for Mosul, Iraq.

Leah Sottile is a writer based in Oregon whose

work focuses on extremist ideologies, the

antigovernment movement and fringe cultures.

She is the host and reporter for the podcast

‘‘Bundyville,’’ which has been nominated twice

for a National Magazine Award. In this issue,

she writes about the Boogaloo, an emerging

antigovernment movement that has become

more visible and violent in 2020. ‘‘I used

to think hateful ideologies existed somewhere

else, somewhere far from me, in some other

place — and I think that’s really common

among white Americans,’’ Sottile says. ‘‘For

years, I’ve devoted my work to understanding

homegrown violence and how a ‘not

my problem’ mentality creates a petri dish

for hate to proliferate.’’
