Donan, a small tidal island where three
sea lochs meet, Loch Duich, Loch Long
and Loch Alsh, in the western Highlands

This is a brilliant action shot, perfectly
suited to black and white. June tells us,
“We headed out at sunrise to photograph
the white horses of the Camargue. The
two guardians and their white horses
came galloping out of the mist; the calm
conditions provided great reflections.”

Virginia explains, “This is a photo of a
tiny three-day-old coot chick. There is
a beautiful area in Kensington Gardens
known as the Italian fountains. Every
year a pair of coots build a nest in the
reeds of one of the large ponds. Four
chicks hatched and followed their parents
incessantly crying to be fed. It was very
amusing watching this as the poor adults
searched for a never-ending supply of food.
I thought it could make a dramatic photo if
I could capture one of the chicks straight
on. Patiently waiting, I was finally rewarded
when one tiny little chick appeared from
the shadows and stared at me.”
