Going darker
For this portrait shot lit only by
the low non-direct sunlight from the
window, we under-exposed by –1-stop
to, again, expose for the skin tones
facing the light, this has helped the
rest of the room remain darker.

CANON SKILLS

Manually setting your
white balance

There are several reasons why

you should generally shoot Raw,

and one is the ability to alter the

white balance setting of your

images post-shoot. Different

kinds of light have different colour

temperatures, which are
measured in degrees Kelvin.
Daylight at midday is around
5500K, for example, but typical
household lighting is around
3000K, so the light is ‘warmer’ or
more yellow (although the value is
lower). When you’re shooting,

your Canon cameras’s white
balance settings aim to neutralize
the colour casts produced by
different types of light, to produce
accurate-looking colours. Learn to
manually select a preset, such as
Daylight, or dial in a number in
Kelvin on your camera.
