CANON SKILLS

Shooting at night
Night is another key situation when
Manual mode will make taking photographs
easier, as you can dictate how bright and dark
your night shots appear, by balancing the
aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
For cityscapes at night, for instance, you
will need to set a narrow aperture of around
f/16 for good depth of field, a shutter speed
between 10-20 secs depending on the
brightness of the city lights, then balance
your exposure with your ISO setting. The
exception to using Manual at night, is when
you need an exposure length of over 30 secs,
in which case you should switch to Bulb mode
on the dial – you may need to select a shutter
speed past 30 secs in Tv or Manual mode on
some Canon DSLRs to find Bulb mode.

With a long exposure
any movement will be
captured as artistic blur
