Clowning around
Akhlaq uses a makeshift home studio, and a model in costume,
to shoot stills inspired by the Oscar-winning 2019 film Joker

photo studio in my
bedroom with a few

While not the most elaborate,
it’s great for moody low-light
stills and I thought this could
work well for recreating
something similar to a Marvel
or DC movie poster, as
superheroes and villains areoften dramatically lit in low

I reached out to the model
David Ribbands (@dribbands),
he’s done modelling work
before and already has a Joker

happy to work with me on this
project and used stills from

makeup to try and get it as

a makeshift studio setup in my

vinyl backdrop and a beauty
dish, or strip box, to modify

with my setup is that I have to
close the curtains of the
bedroom to make it totally
dark and achieve the low-light
look I want, but then my
camera will struggle toI
