The Canon Magazine 75

Performance

Okay, let’s deal with the issue

everyone’s talking about right

away: yes, shooting anything above

standard 4K 30p video will cause

the Canon EOS R5 to heat up

internally, thus necessitating

recording limits to prevent

overheating. Shooting 4K 30p,

causes no overheating issues

whatsoever, so you can shoot as

limitations will be incurred the
more demanding your video
settings. So shooting 4K 60p will
cause the camera to overheat in
about 35 minutes, while shooting
8K 30p will result in overheating in

about 20 minutes – after which you
will need to allow the camera to
cool down before recording again.

productions to shoot single
20-minute takes, the overheating
issue is cumulative – so if you shoot
a series of shorter videos, or if you
take a lot of photos, the camera

WHILE THE limitations on recording video
certainly mean that you can’t shoot as freely
as you would like, due to overheating issues
as discussed above, the video capabilities of
the Canon EOS R5 really are remarkable.
If you only film occasionally, or you only
shoot in 4K 30p, you’ll have no problem,
but if you shoot 4K 60p or above then
you’ll need to tread carefully.
However, it’s worth persevering with
because the R5’s 8K video is simply
jaw-dropping, with four times the resolution
of regular 4K footage! Canon Ambassador

Ivan D’Antonio – one of Italy’s most
promising filmmakers, having already picked
up numerous international awards for his
short films, commercials and music videos

  • said of the R5 and its 8K video mode:
    “As the R5 captures full-frame uncropped 8K
video it means then in post you can crop and
re-frame video, then pan and zoom.” He also
explained that, “The thing I find really useful
for video is the ability to change AF
responsiveness and speed. If you set them
properly it really does look like you had a
    human puller with.”

Though 8K is limited to about 20 minutes of filming
