W

hen macOS Big Sur is rolled
out, Apple’s Safari web
browser will enjoy its
biggest update since it was Ľrst
introduced back in 2003 with MacOS
X Panther. Building on its amazing
performance, elegant design and
pioneering privacy protection,
Safari will be taken to a new level

of excellence, becoming
even more eL·cient and
providing an even greater
degree of privacy. In terms
of eL·ciency, Apple says that
when visiting frequently
loaded websites, Big Sur’s
Safari will load them up to
50% faster than Google
Chrome — all while
continuing to deliver
industry–leading battery life on
its MacBooks.
Safari was the Ľrst browser
to introduce private browsing,
cookie–blocking and intelligent
tracking prevention, and with the
Big Sur update Apple wants to
provide its users with even more
visibility into how each site you
visit tries to track you and the ways
in which Safari will protect you.
For this purpose, a new Privacy
Report button will be accessible
from the Safari toolbar when you
visit a site that you can click on to
better understand how that site is
treating your privacy. Safari will
also monitor your online
passwords more closely
to make sure that they
haven’t been compromised
in a data breach.

More powerful, easier to use, and now even more secure

Extensions
Safari extensions will also play
a bigger role after the update.
Apple is adding support for
the web extensions API, so
developers can easily bring
across extensions they’ve created
for other browsers. A new
category will also be added to the
App Store to make browsing and
discovering new extensions easy.
With new extensions comes a
greater risk to your privacy. In
other browsers, extensions can
access every page you visit,
every tab you open, and
everything you type; in Big Sur
you will be able to choose exactly
which sites each extension can
work with and even give them
access just for the day. New
extensions will appear in your
Safari toolbar — click to enable
then as you see fit. An example
of this in action is Recipe Filter,
which is able to extract recipes
from cooking websites and
present them in a simplified pop–
up window, making it easy to add
ingredients to your shopping list.
Extensions will revolutionize the
way you use Safari.

Safari Extensions will have their own
dedicated wing of the Mac App Store

Clicking on the Privacy Report
will show how many trackers
have been prevented by Apple.

>>>BUILT–IN
TRANSLATION

Safari will also feature built–in
translation in Big Sur. Whenever you
open a page displaying foreign text,
a new translate icon will appear to
the right of the Search/URL bar.
Click this to choose a language to
translate the site into.
