Filmr for iOS is titled as
a video editor but it’s really
more of a tool for creating
short–form, social media–
focused content. It’s free to download
and there’s a seven–day trial of the Pro
features (a Pro subscription costs a hefty
$11.49/month, $39.99/year, or $169.99/
lifetime). The design is straightforward,
and you create and manage projects
from the main screen. For each one you
can set its format, with a decent selection
of aspect ratios and orientations
available as well as colors and frames.
Video and picture content can be
added from your Camera Roll or from the

Camera+ was among the
first iOS apps to bring
manual controls to your
phone’s camera, and a
decade later it continues to take
advantage of the latest hardware. The
modest cost is a one-off, with no IAPs. It
supports RAW shooting and editing, uses
a Lightbox to store pictures but also
integrates with your Camera Roll. There
are full manual controls available as well

and a clever Smile mode that shoots
when your subjects are smiling.
This computational approach to
shooting has been further enhanced with

GREAT

EXCELLENT

Combine stills and video with text, music,
effects and stickers to create short videos.

The software–powered editing tools like Magic
ML and Straighten can make decisions for you.

“Toys” camera, where you can film with
special effects like looping and reversing.
Once in the timeline, which is actually
a stack of clips, any clip can be edited
easily and there’s a surprising number
of effects and filters. Add transitions by
tapping, and add music from your Files or
from the app’s library (Pro subscription
required). You can add text and overlays
from your library or Giphy.
Finished projects can be exported
directly to most major social networks
and messaging services, and it can auto–
split longer videos into Instagram stories.
Filmr is very good at simplifying the
process of creating dynamic, quirky video

the new Magic ML (Machine Learning)
mode in version 4.0. This works when
shooting or on existing images and
quickly analyzes which aspects of a
picture could be improved, such as
exposure, white balance, and so on.
Where it differs from many similar
tools found in other apps is that it shows
you which parameters it has changed,
and makes them editable along with any
other tweaks you want to make. So if you
like what it’s done with the colors but not
the light, for example, you can make your
own adjustments. The changes are
nondestructive so you can change or
undo things at any point. In practice it

content for social media. It’s great for
people who regularly use Instagram
stories and similar services, while more
casual users will want to use the free trial
to see if it’s an app they want to pay for.
THE BOTTOM LINE. Great for quickly
creating quirky content for social media
channels. HOLLIN JONES

works well and will certainly spruce up
most images in a sympathetic way. As
a package, Camera+ 2 is a slick and
powerful way to take control of your iOS
cameras and get great results.
THE BOTTOM LINE. An even more
powerful way to shoot and edit pictures
on iOS as of version 4.0. HOLLIN JONES
