My iPhone’s keyboard stops working

when adding appointments

When I try adding an appointment to Calendar, why does the keyboard on my iPhone stop
working properly? How can I fix it?

Quick–fire

questions
& answers

WHY IS MY HEALTH
DATA TAKING UP SO
MUCH STORAGE?
If you add extra
measurements or
information, these soon
mount up. If you don’t need
to access older values,
preserve them in an iTunes
encrypted backup, or share
them in iCloud. Then clear
your old data through
Settings > General > iPhone
Storage > Health, and
monitor what’s in iCloud via
Settings > [Apple ID] > iCloud
Manage Storage > Health.

HOW TO GET URGENT
TEXTS IF DO NOT
DISTURB IS ON?
This normally silences all
incoming messages, but you
can add the phone number
of each specific sender as an
Emergency Bypass to this
feature. Open their card in
Contacts, tap Text Tone. At
the top, turn on Emergency
Bypass and set the alert
tone. The tap Done when
you’re finished.

A general problem getting the
keyboard to work suggests that there’s
a developing hardware fault with your
iPhone’s display, but where this is
confined to one situation it’s probably
a software bug or conflict. Before going
any further, ensure your iOS and all
apps are fully up to date.
Start with the most specific, and
check any third–party apps which
affect the keyboard. These include
additional keyboards using SwiftKey,
and utilities which work with existing
keyboards, such as TextExpander.
You can disable SwiftKey in Settings

SwiftKey > Keyboards. And look in
Settings > General > Keyboard at the
Keyboards item there in case you have
another, like Gboard, which is also
active and could be tripping over
SwiftKey or TextExpander.
Disabling these could resolve the
problem. If it does but you still want to
use those custom keyboards, remove
the app and try installing it again from
the App Store. If the problem returns,
report it as a bug to the relevant
developer so they can resolve it.
If you still get nowhere and have
tried turning your iPhone off and on
again, you may need to return it to
factory settings and restore from a
backup. When performed from a Mac
or PC according to Apple’s instructions
at bit.ly/mac354iprstr, it’s sometimes
the only way to fix such problems.

Remove a custom keyboard in Settings’ Keyboards by tapping
Edit at the top–right and then the No Entry icon. You can
reinstall the keyboard.
