Make a mask
Tap the Mask icon below. This
adds a layer mask that hides that
background while keeping the selected
subject visible. The edge of the mask
isn’t perfect but we can fine–tune that
in the desktop version of Photoshop.

Create new
document
In iOS Photoshop, tap Create New.
Tap the Screen button to view preset
documents that fit various devices.
Tap the iMac 27 icon. Label your new
document “Wallpaper.” Tap Create.

Scale down
In Layers, drag the pasted
background layer below the person’s
layer. Tap the Transform tool icon, then
drag the control handles to scale down
and reposition the background layer to
fit the wallpaper–sized frame.

Copy and paste
Tap the Layer Actions icon and
pick Copy Layer. Tap the Home icon. Tap
the Wallpaper document to open it. Go
to Layer Actions and tap Paste. Tap the
Transform tool and scale the shot to fit.
Tap the Flip Horizontal icon. Tap Done.

Choose an image
The new blank document will
appear in the workspace. To find pics to
add to your blank document, tap the
Home icon. Tap Import and Open.
Choose Camera Roll. Browse to tap on
a shot and it’ll open in Photoshop iOS.

Create bokeh
To blur the background, tap on
its layer thumbnail. Tap on the Filters
And Adjustments icon and choose
Gaussian Blur. Drag the Blur Amount
slider right. This mimics the blur
produced by the iPhone’s Portrait mode.

Work at home
In Photoshop on your Mac, go to
Cloud documents in the home screen
and double–click to download the
synced PSD document. You can then
soften the mask’s hard edge using the
Select and Mask tools.

Add background
Tap the Home icon. Tap Import
and Open. Browse to tap a background
shot in your Camera Roll to open it in
Photoshop. Tap the Layer Actions icon,
choose Copy Layer. Go to the Wallpaper
doc and paste it in as a new layer.

Make a selection
Tap and hold on the toolbar’s
Selection tool icon. Choose Select
Subject from the pop–up window.
Photoshop works out the main subject
and places a “marching ant” selection
marquee around its edges.
