was the astonishing

warning from the US

National Hurricane

Centre (NHC) early

yesterday as Hurricane Laura tore

into the coast of Louisiana.

This was a devastating hurricane,

winds reaching 150mph, a category

four storm when it made landfall.

There were unusually dire warnings

of storm surges reaching up to six

metres high, extreme winds, flash

flooding and tornados. The storm

surge warning was especially

chilling: “Unsurvivable storm surge

with large and destructive waves will

cause catastrophic damage,” the

NHC said. “This surge could

penetrate up to 40 miles inland from

the immediate coastline, and

floodwaters will not fully recede for

several days after the storm.”

Laura had rapidly intensified on

Wednesday as it passed over the

Gulf of Mexico, its winds increasing

from 75mph to 125mph in a day. A

near-perfect catalogue of

ingredients fuelled the increase.

Ocean temperatures in the Gulf

were very warm, about 30C, and

there was moderate wind shear —

when winds at different heights in

the atmosphere blow in different

directions or speeds, they can shred

up a hurricane.

A visible sign of trouble ahead was

wispy cirrus clouds streaming from

the top of the hurricane. That

revealed good outflow from the

storm’s top, venting off its winds like

a chimney and allowing the storm to

draw up more energy from the

warm moist air on the sea surface.

Even though Laura rapidly

weakened into a tropical depression

as it barrelled inland, it still

unleashed dangerous flooding rains.

It may yet be resurrected as a

tropical storm once it reaches the

east coast of the US and the Atlantic.

Eventually its remains will decay

in the colder waters of the Atlantic,

but Britain could still feel its after-

effects. The mass of humid tropical

air left over could interact with the

jet stream, knocking its track over

Britain. This is causing great

uncertainty in weather forecasts for

the UK next week.
