(Antfer) #1
return to the Yorkshire side
was a non-event as their
opening match against
Nottinghamshire at
Headingley was aban-
doned without a ball
bowled. The England
captain hasn’t played a
T20 match for his county
since July 20, 2018 and,
despite having been in
England’s biosecure bub-
ble for ten weeks, wanted
to take the opportunity
to play for his county.
Root is likely to be
available for Yorkshire’s
matches against Derby-
shire on Sunday and
Leicestershire Foxes next
Wednesday but his availability

after that is unclear because
he is almost certain to be
selected in England’s ODI
squad to take on
Australia in a three-
match series starting on
September 11.
Gloucestershire
against Northampton-
shire, Derbyshire against
Leicestershire and Glamor-
gan against Worcester-
shire were all abandoned
without a ball bowled.
There are two match-
es — Sussex against
Surrey and Birmingham
against Somerset — due
to take place today, with
the weather forecast look-
ing slightly better.

Scoreboards and results

Keaton Jennings’s first T20 century led
Lancashire to a 27-run victory over his
former club Durham in the only match
completed on a damp opening day of
this year’s T20 Blast.
Heavy rain meant that six of
yesterday’s seven matches
were either abandoned with-
out a ball bowled or unable
to complete enough overs
to get a result.
Jennings became the first
T20 centurion of this year’s
truncated competition,
hitting 10 fours and
three sixes in making
108 from 63 balls
against a strong Dur-
ham attack that includ-
ed Mark Wood on his
return from the England
Test bubble.
Alex Davies, Jennings’s
opening partner, helped get
Lancashire off to a flying start
by hitting 65 from 50 balls in
a 170-run partnership. Lan-
cashire finished on 190 for
three and in reply Durham lost
two wickets before the end of the
third over. Despite a third-wicket
partnership of 64 between Alex
Lees, who made 51 off 39 balls, and
David Bedingham, they were un-
able to keep up with the run rate
and finished well short on 163
for seven.
In the south group,
there was severe frus-
tration for Kent who
were only five
balls away from
completing an
emphatic victory

sodden start

against Hampshire using the Duck-
worth-Lewis-Stern method.
Chasing Hampshire’s 139 for six,
Kent cruised to 52 without loss after 25
balls, well ahead of the DLS rate, but
with five overs needed in their reply to
constitute a match, the umpires were
forced to take the players off the pitch
after 4.1 overs not to return.
Zak Crawley, returning to his county
after his 267 in the third Test against
Pakistan, helped get
Kent’s reply off to a
brisk start, reaching
22 not out off nine
balls before rain
intervened.
Max Holden be-
came the second cen-
turion of this year’s
tournament when he
hit an unbeaten 102
from 60 balls as
Middlesex posted a
healthy 184 for five
against Essex at Chelmsford but
only nine balls were possible in
Essex’s reply and the match was
abandoned.
Middlesex have lost four
of their five top runscorers
from last season’s
run to the quarter-
finals and will be
relying on
players such as
Holden, Steve
Eskinazi and
Nick Gubbins to
make up the
short-fall. Matt
Quinn was the
pick of the Essex
bowlers, taking
two for 24 from his
four overs.

Cannes opening for
global race series
Racing A global series of races in
cities across the world is set to
begin in Cannes next spring,
according to organisers.
City Racing, which was
conceived in 2014 and would
feature pop-up racecourses in
iconic locations, received
permission from France Galop to
stage its first event in the
south of France in October, but
the global pandemic forced a
rearrangement until April or
May next year.
A special racing surface will be
laid on the beach, finishing near
the headquarters of the Cannes
Film Festival.
6 Southwell and the British
Horseracing Authority are
investigating six horse
deaths at the Nottinghamshire
racecourse in the past
month — an abnormally high
fatality rate.

Cricket South Africa
sack chief executive
Cricket Thabang Moroe has been
sacked as the chief executive of
Cricket South Africa.
Moroe was initially suspended
in December, pending an
independent investigation, which
has now revealed “acts of serious
misconduct which warranted the
sanction of dismissal”, a Cricket
South Africa statement read.
“Thabang Moroe was offered
sufficient opportunity to provide
representations to the
independent forensic auditors
and to the board regarding the
allegations of misconduct, which
opportunity he failed and/or
refused to utilise.”

Catalans-Leeds game
postponed due to virus
Rugby league Catalans Dragons’
Super League game at home to
Leeds Rhinos has been postponed
after the French club had four
positive coronavirus tests. The
scheduled match for September 7
will be moved after three players
and one non-playing staff tested
positive this week. Dragons’ game
against Wigan tomorrow had
already been postponed.
The Catalans-Leeds match had
been a catch-up fixture from
March before the league shut
down because of the pandemic. It
was hoped the game would be the
first since the season resumed to
be played in front of fans.

Left-handed openers dominated in games where there was a reasonable amount
of cricket, with Jennings, above, and Holden, below left, catching the eye
