How alienation and architecture

influence Kasper Ledet’s work

FRESH EYES

Kasper Ledet’s career as an architect was short-

lived. “I studied architecture in Copenhagen only

to drop out one and a half year later,” he explains.

Luckily, Ledet had already been pulled into

the realm of graphic design, using architecture

to influence his work. “A kind of eureka moment

for me was when I discovered the work of British

designer Peter Saville,” he says, explaining that it

helped him realise graphic design was capable

of being abstract and emotive at the same time.

Ledet draws his inspiration from various

sources, in particular German playwright and

theatre director Bertolt Brecht. “Brecht is an

important source of inspiration to me – his ideas

of alienation and self-referentiality are continually

negotiated in my work,” says Ledet.

This self-referentiality is explored in his recent

can and bottle designs for To Øl, with its emphasis

on the visual as a construct.
