HIDDEN DEPTHS

THE NEW YORK TIMES FOR KIDS

Typography specialists Sawdust (Jonathan Quainton
and Rob Gonzalez) were briefed to design a piece
of typographic art that was inspired by optical illusions
for the cover of The New York Times for Kids Sunday
supplement. “The objectives were to make it visually
engaging and fun to solve,” says Gonzalez.
The finished work uses variations in line thickness
and direction to spell out a message. The first part is

easily read, while the second part is semi-hidden. “We
combined two techniques to create a message inspired
by both optical illusions and optical art,” says Gonzalez.
“The first technique and the start of the message, CAN
YOU SEE, is revealed through a change in line weight,
while the second part of the message, WHAT I SEE?, is
created by a change in line direction.”
