well as a new membrane, the keyboard features
a new metal dome that’s ‘subtly different’ from
the previous iteration. “It could be new surface
treatment, and/or a tweaked alloy, possibly to
alleviate problems with durability, bounce-back,
or other issues,” iFixIt said.

What’s perhaps most interesting about the new
keyboard, however, is that Apple used the new
release to extend its Keyboard Service Program
to all MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro
models with a butterfly mechanism keyboard,
something the company had failed to do in the
past. Apple also acknowledged failures with
its keyboards and apologized back in March,
but it was only with the launch of the new
MacBook Pro that the company admitted it was
in the wrong, and that users weren’t to blame for
defect keyboards. Anyone with a 2018 MacBook
Air, 2018 MacBook Pro or 2019 MacBook Pro can
qualify for free repairs up to four years after
the original purchase date worldwide online
or at Apple Stores.

MORE MACS ON THE WAY

Apple’s Mac lineup has undergone significant
changes over recent years, with virtually all of
its products seeing major updates to introduce
new designs and advanced functionality. It
remains to be seen exactly where Apple is
headed next with its hardware, and the fact that
recent releases have been unveiled online rather
than at a keynote presentation suggests we’re in
the current Mac lineup’s mid-cycle and should
not expect any major improvements. But one
product category has waited longer than any
other to be updated: the Mac Pro.
