I discovered
this handsome monarch
butterfly chrysalis on a
cosmos plant in my flower
garden. I have lots of
milkweeds growing nearby
for caterpillars to munch
on, so one must have
ventured over to this
plant to start the next
phase of its life cycle.

During the
first wave
of fall migration, I was
in my backyard taking
pictures of birds when
this female American
redstart appeared at my
water fountain. She was
very excited to see water
and kept hopping back
and forth, fanning her tail
feathers. After several
minutes, she finally took
the plunge and jumped in,
spending a few minutes
splashing in the water.
