BACKYARD TALES
This is a
Florida
scrub-jay,
a threatened species in
Florida due to habitat loss.
The picture was taken in
Palatka, Florida, in a scrub
ecosystem. I was with
several friends snapping
photos in the area, and
the scrub-jay landed
on one of the cameras
and gave us a look. This
picture shows how much
personality these birds
have—they are curious,
friendly and full of sass!

Florida scrub-jays have
the distinction of being
the only bird species that
resides solely in Florida.
AT
HOME
Bluebirds or
tree swallows
(pictured here) typically
end up nesting in a
birdhouse in our yard
each year. I enjoy seeing
the adult birds feed their
young. The adults spend a
lot of time flying around,
catching insects to bring
back to their nests.
