E

arlier this year, plans to
phase out badger culling
were announced in
Westminster. In June,
Scotland’s Parliament
banned the unlicensed culling
of mountain hares – another
complicated and controversial issue.
This has fanned the flames of debate,
and so, just as we delved deeper into
the badger cull a few months back,
this issue, we’re unpacking the facts
behind the new Scottish legislation
and asking how it will affect this
native highlander (p50).
Sticking with British mammals in
the news, in early August, we learned

that Defra had given permission for
beavers to remain in their Devon
home. But how exactly did this trial
come about, and what benefits will
they bring to the Otter Valley (p36)?
Before I leave you to get stuck into
another issue bursting with natural
goodness, can I draw your attention
to our website and social media
channels (details below left)? They offer
a healthy dose of ‘Vitamin N’ to give
you a daily boost. Until next time...

Hare we go again...
