When a honeybee colony comes under threat from a
European hornet (a species roughly twice the size of
the bees), the workers spring into action and form a
ball of fuzzy bodies around the intruder. Initially, this
incapacitates the hornet and stops it from sending out
a signal for backup. But, as the bees close around their
would-be attacker, they start to vibrate and will end up
