(Antfer) #1
ABOVE Pyrosomes are free-
floating, bioluminescent creatures
comprised of individual organisms
known as zooids. This one, in the
Sargasso Sea, is about 30cm long,
but colonies of up to 18m have
been recorded. Pyrosomes swim
to the surface to feed after sunset,
often carrying tiny passengers – in
this case a young pelagic shrimp –
seeking shelter from predators.
