atdepthsof15–40m.Theymaylookendearing, but
seahorsesarevoraciouslittlecarnivores that devour
copiousquantitiesoftinycrustaceansand other
planktonicorganisms.Scientistsarecurrently studying
whetherseahorsescouldbeconsidered nocturnal, with
earlyfindingsindicatingthattheyprobably are.

RIGHT A mauve jellyfish shot at
20m in the Sargasso Sea. Its
apple-sized bell pulses throughout
the night, trailing almost a metre
of stinging tentacles ready to
disarm passing prey.
