AMBIENT LIGHTING A ceiling
fi xture may be enough to light the
space, but recessed lights off er the
best coverage, especially in large
kitchens. Combining recessed cans
around the perimeter of the room
with a beautiful central fi xture is
an equally attractive and practical
solution for overall lighting.

TASK LIGHTING In this space,
work is the main course. Install light
sources directly above work spots.
Pendants are a popular option
over an island, and undercabinet
puck or rope lights are great for
cutting areas. Use LED lamps with
automatic magnetic sensors to
illuminate dark drawers.

ACCENT LIGHTING Tape lights
in the toe-kick (between the cabinet
and fl oor) look cool and provide
soft light for late-night trips to the
kitchen. Strip lights or downlights
can showcase dishes in open
shelves or glass-front cabinets.
