Synoptic situation

A weak area of high pressure
centred just to the north of
the Azores will ridge into
southwestern Britain and
Ireland, bringing some dry and
sunny conditions. An area of
low pressure over Scandinavia
will push a trough and a weak
occluded front across the rest
of the British Isles, leading to
the risk of showers spreading
from northwest to southeast.

S

eptember can’t make up its
mind whether it is in
summer or autumn. This
weekend the weather will
show its autumnal character
in a chill breeze and some outbreaks
of showers but next week will bring
some warm, summery sunshine, at
least in the southern half of Britain.
The poet and Jesuit priest Gerard
Manley Hopkins wrote in his 1877
sonnet Hurrahing in Harvest:
“Summer ends now; now, barbarous
in beauty, the stooks arise/ Around;
up above, what wind-walks! what
lovely behaviour/ Of silk-sack
clouds! has wilder, wilful-wavier/
Meal-drift moulded ever and melted
across skies?”
Hopkins was extolling the beauty
of the autumn landscape of the Vale
of Clwyd, and he said the sonnet was
“the outcome of half an hour of
extreme enthusiasm as I walked
home alone one day from fishing in
the Elwy”. He paints an evocative
picture of the open sky, the “wind-
walks” through which the clouds
sweep. The white clouds are smooth
and shiny sacks of silk, their shapes
shifting in the sky like “meal-drift”,
the white dust in the air of mills
where grain was ground into flour.
Although there will be gales in
Scotland at the start of next week,
winds will be lighter farther south
and temperatures will start to rise as
high pressure begins to nudge in
from the southwest. By Tuesday a
weather front will stretch south
from Iceland to the sub-tropical seas
of the Atlantic. A southwesterly
breeze will carry that warm, humid
air, which will unleash heavy rain
when it hits the west of Scotland. For
much of England and Wales it will
be dry with temperatures climbing
as high as 25C in sunshine, giving a
taste of summer again that could
last into Wednesday and Thursday.
Perhaps it was spells of warm
autumnal weather like this that
inspired William Wordsworth, who
wrote in his poem September, 1819:
“Departing summer hath assumed/
An aspect tenderly illumed,/ The
gentlest look of spring;/ That calls
from yonder leafy shade/ Unfaded,
yet prepared to fade,/ A timely
carolling.”
