REJOICE in the Lord always. I will say
it again: Rejoice! Philippians 4.4 (NIV)

other part will be unique to
each individual.
One aspect of Michael’s
praying, honed during his
years as a student in Rome,
was to go out in the
afternoon, especially to the
church of San Claudio in the
Piazza San Silvestro, near the
English Church, where there
was exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament all afternoon.
“There,” Michael has written,
“I often literally sweated it
out, in dull, dumb, boring,
knee-aching slog. I slept there
often; I seldom had much
sense of prayer.” But he
added, “Yet I went back there
again and again, day by day,
like a drowning man grabbing
at a lifeline.”
How different people
experience prayer will vary.
During lockdown churches
have been closed. As
churches and other places of
worship reopen, the question
is raised: will people return?
And yet these closures of
churches have not stopped
people praying. They long for
the experience of community
that liturgy brings, and still
they pray on their own.
Prayer may be daunting,
but it is also addictive.
However, unlike other
addictions, like alcohol,
drugs, or gambling, the
hangover comes first. We
may resist initially, feeling
dull, dumb and bored, like
Michael, but if we persevere,
overcoming the hangover, we
find ourselves going back,
again and again, grabbing
for the lifeline that
transforms and blesses
everything we do, even in
our bleakest moments.

Monsignor Roderick Strange is
the Rector of Mater Ecclesiae
College, Twickenham

He was still only 24, but his
wartime record was so
packed with experience that
the Archbishop of
Westminster, Cardinal
Bernard Griffin, believed he
was ten years older and sent
him to the Beda College in
Rome that prepared older
men for ordination. When the
cardinal learnt his true age,
he was, Michael recorded,
“taken aback”. But plans had
been put in place and at that
late stage were not to be
changed.
The change for Michael,
however, was dramatic, as he
was to explain later: “After
being a company commander
in a Guards regiment with
respect, power, authority and
responsibility, I found it very
hard to be nobody, with
nothing.” Michael was having
to find, as we say in these
extraordinary times of ours,
“a new normal”. And he did it
not least through embracing
a life of asceticism and by
discovering a pattern of
prayerfulness.
Most of us, I imagine, will
not take to sleeping on the
floor rather than in the
comfort of our beds, nor
rise early in the morning,
around four o’clock, to spend
time with the Lord in
undisturbed prayer. That was
Michael. I once heard of
someone who had tried to
follow his example and nearly
had a breakdown. No, each
to his own.
One of the first lessons I
learnt from Michael was a
remark from St John of the
Cross, namely that no two
people go more than halfway
along the same road to God.
A part of the journey we
share, that is why we can talk
together about it and learn
from one another; but the

‘P

rayer is addictive, but
the hangover comes
first’’ is a saying coined
by Michael Hollings. Michael
was a man of prayer.
As a young man during the
Second World War he was an
officer in the Coldstream
Guards. In north Africa in
December 1942, just before
his 21st birthday, he led his
platoon into action and was
wounded in the throat, but
played down the seriousness
of his injury. When some
time later, in accordance with
the plan of action, his platoon
disengaged from the attack,
he had to march them back
for several miles. Eventually
he received medical
attention. The wound was
found to be serious and an
operation was needed
urgently to save his life. For
his “devotion to duty” he
was awarded the Military
Cross. He remained in the
army until 1946.
Although he was a cradle
Catholic whose faith was an
important part of his life, it
had, according to his own
account, faded during these
war years. Yet it also began to
revive towards the war’s end
so that in the summer of
1946, after a year in Palestine,
Michael left the army and
approached the Diocese of
Westminster, in order to
prepare for priestly
ordination. His sense of
vocation was not inspired by
lofty, pious sentiments, but by
the desire to help people.

Pattern of prayer offers a

lifeline in the bleakest times
