7 Lower brightness to save battery
A good way to increase battery life is to lower the
brightness of your screen. This can be done using dedicated keys
on your keyboard or in Settings > System > Display – use the
on-screen slider to choose a lower setting. Muting the sound of
your laptop is another quick and easy way to reduce power
consumption, so that’s worth considering too.

8 Require password after waking from sleep
We mentioned security at the beginning of the article, and
it goes beyond just turning off your screen – you can also
configure your computer to require you to enter your password
when it wakes from sleep. In Settings, go to Accounts and click
‘Sign-in options’. From the ‘Require sign-in’ menu select ‘When PC
wakes from sleep’. Q

Lid and power button options
Close the window and, when you’re back at the Edit Plan
Settings section of the Control Panel, click Save Changes. Back in
Power Options, click either ‘Choose what the power buttons do’ or
‘Choose what closing the lid does’. Then use the drop-down menu
to choose what your PC does when it’s plugged in or running on
battery – Sleep, Hibernate, ‘Shut down’, or ‘Turn off the display’.

3 Working with power plans
To the right of the ‘Power & sleep’ window, click ‘Additional
power settings’ to access the Control Panel. The first thing you can
do here is choose from one of the preset power plans – or create
a new one via the ‘Create a power plan’ link. If you click ‘Change
plan settings’ you can make tweaks to existing plans, including
adjusting sleep and display settings as before.

Configure battery options
Now go to Settings > System > Battery. Make sure the box
labelled ‘Extend battery life by limiting background activity and
push notifications when your device is low on battery power’ is
ticked, and use the slider to indicate the battery level at which
this setting should kick in. You should also tick the ‘Lower
screen brightness when in battery saver’ box.

4 Advanced power settings
Click ‘Advanced power settings’” and you’ll find a huge
number of options arranged in a tree-like structure. There are too
many settings to work through here, but there are some that are
of particular interest. For example, you can put your Wi-Fi adapter
into a reduced power mode, and also adjust power settings for
your computer’s graphics card.
