neDrive is much more
than a simple backup
tool – it’s perfectly
suited for syncing and
collaboration, too. The
step-by-step guide on
the page opposite, reveals the options
available to you for keeping data in
sync and accessing it on the go.
OneDrive is also designed to share
files and folders with others. Note that
anyone – friends, family or colleagues

  • you share the files with must have
their own OneDrive account to access
them. The quickest way to share a file
or folder is through Windows itself –
simply navigate to the item in question
in File Explorer, right-click it and choose
    ‘Share a OneDrive link’.
This copies a web link to your
clipboard. Paste this into a message or
email to your recipient. Any shared
items can be edited by your recipient, so
use this approach with care. Recipients
log into their own OneDrive account to
access the shared items, and pop-up
    notifications in Windows will appear
whenever someone edits or deletes a
file. Unwanted changes can be undone
    through OneDrive’s web interface –
    see over the page.
Once a folder or file has been shared,
you’ll see a person icon appear in the
Status column in File Explorer. To make
changes to an item’s shared status – or
to share it more securely, right-click
the item and choose ‘More OneDrive

sharing options’ to open the folder in
the OneDrive web interface in your
usual browser.

Advanced sharing options
Select a file or folder in the OneDrive
web interface and click the ‘i’ button in
the top-right corner beneath your
account picture or icon to view its

properties. Look in the Has Access
section to confirm the current sharing
settings: roll your mouse over an icon to
see specific users who have access to
the item as well as any file links you’ve
generated in Windows itself. These links
remain active so you can share them
again if you wish. However, note that if
they fell into the wrong person’s hands,

Access your PC’s files from anywhere

You can share files and folders directly from
File Explorer, but it’s not recommended.

Once enabled, you can browse, and transfer, any file
on your PC while on the road through your browser.
