Q I was doing a fresh reinstall

of Windows 10 when my

desktop PC died completely – both

the motherboard and the hard

drive according to the local repair

shop. Can you confirm that I can’t

simply reinstall Windows 10 on any

replacement motherboard and that

I’ll need to buy a new copy?

Sadly, yes – Lesley

confirmed she’d taken

advantage of the free

update to Windows 10 when it was

first released. The only way you

could avoid this is if you were able

to source the same motherboard

model – extremely unlikely, and

probably quite expensive. It’s worth

totting up the cost of the repairs as

well as a new copy of Windows

(around £100 for a retail version) to

see whether you might not be

better off buying a new desktop

tower – an entry level HP Pavilion

590 with Windows 10 Home can be

yours for under £250 (www.ebuyer.

com/838466-hp), for example.

Nick P’s solution

We were unable to

replicate the issue on

any of our Windows 10

machines, suggesting that it’s an

incredibly rare glitch. Instead, we

offered Gerald the following

workaround: set up a virtual

machine running Windows 95.

To do that, download and install

VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org)
