Open VirtualBox and choose
Machine > New. Name it
Windows 95, set its type to
‘Microsoft Windows’ and its version
to ‘Windows 95’ and allocate it
256MB of RAM. Choose ‘Use an
existing virtual hard disk file’, click
the button to open a new dialog
box, then click Add to select
Windows_95.vdi. Make sure it’s
highlighted and click Choose
followed by Create.
Select your virtual machine, and
then click Start. Click ‘Cancel’ when
prompted for a network password,
then work through any other dialog
boxes until the desktop appears.
Choose Devices > Optical Drives
[drive letter] to install the
program via CD; if you have a
download file, choose Devices >
Optical Drives > ‘Create ad hoc
VISO’. Locate the folder containing
the installer using the upper panes,
then drag the file into the bottom
pane and click OK. Now open My
Computer and double-click the CD
drive where you’ll find the file is
available – just double-click it to
run the installer.

I have an extensive audiobook
CD collection that I want to rip
using iTunes (www.apple.com/
itunes) so I can stream them to my
iPad. I’ve heard conflicting advice
about what to do – can you

Audiobooks require a bit
more work to file them
correctly in iTunes.
They’re stored in your Music folder
and considered music, so need
rearranging manually. Start by
optimising iTunes to rip spoken-
word CDs: choose Edit >
Preferences and click ‘Import
Settings...’. Either choose the
Spoken Podcast setting under AAC
Encoder or select MP3, choose
Custom and set the Stereo Bit Rate
to 64 kbps to keep file sizes down.
Click ‘OK’ twice, pop in your CD and
click Import CD, verify the import
settings and click OK again. After
the first disc has been ripped,
