where Perkins uses
her undeniable warmth
and charm to tease
stories from white
Americans who have
crossed the border
from the US in search
of lovely beaches and
cheap dentistry is
also eye-opening.camera cannot, of
course, be decently or
humanely gainsaid —
but they don’t always
come with concrete
solutions. Perky and
eager to be liked, she’s
at her best attending
to the other side of the
argument, as voiced
by a pair of Arizona
ranchers whose lives
are being directly
affected by illegal
migration and a USstory with an open
mind. There isn’t
a story that doesn’t
prompt her to emote,
crack a joke or make
an impeccably bien-
pensant point about the
world. “The more we
shut doors, the more
we shut doors on our
humanity” is one. “It’s
the hallmark of a great
country — all are
welcome” is another.

than an ebullient and
