The Fairmont’s original front
suspension gave way to a Specialty
Cars tube front axle and parallel leaf
springs from Detroit/Eaton. A Flaming
River Vega steering box sends inputs
to the passenger-side wheel. Wheels
are replicas of ones Ford installed on
1965 and 1966 427 SOHC Mustangs.
Ray Franklin’s Vintage Engineering
is the only source for these spot-on
replicas. Tires are Firestone 6.40-15s
from Coker.
Though the Fairmont’s four-link
rear suspension works well on
the dragstrip, increasing the ride
height for this Match Bash tribute
unleashed ungodly axle hop. A swap
to Chrysler Super Stock leaf springs
and extra-length S/S shocks cured
the tendency. The fresh gas tank is a
new tri-five Chevy unit with a built-in
high-pressure EFI pump.

feeds power to a Tremec TKO-600
five-speed transmission and rebuilt
1988 Mustang 8.8 Traction Lock with
Ford racing 3.73:1 gears. Five-lug
axleshafts are passenger-side Ford
Ranger boneyard goodies. Aluminum/
steel hybrid drums are from 1979
Mustang Turbo applications, re-drilled
for five lugs.
